Modern tower defense games for iOS

TowerMadness

The tower defense genre started out with Desktop Tower Defense, a Flash game you could play in your Web browser, but once the iTunes App Store opened, developers quickly realized this type of game was a perfect fit for iOS devices. Soon, tower defense games that are now iOS classics emerged, including GeoDefense, Fieldrunners, and the hugely popular Plants vs. Zombies. The touch-screen interface made iOS devices a natural platform for tower defense gaming, allowing you to place units easily with only a few taps of your finger, and the result was the perfect time-waster requiring both quick thinking and a solid strategy.
Those early games are still fun even now, but the modern entries in the Tower Defense genre add even more to the action with 3D graphics, new types of gameplay, and new ways to take advantage of today's more powerful iOS devices. Whether you're a serious tower defense aficionado or new to the genre, you'll like the direction developers have taken with the tower defense games that are now available.
This week's collection of iOS apps are all tower defense games. The first is the latest sequel to a popular franchise in which you defend against an alien invasion of the homeworld. The second offers up crisp 3D graphics as you defend a flock of sheep from an onslaught of enemies. The last is a new game that takes a different angle, challenging you to become the invader against well-defended maps, using units and abilities that keep your assault force alive.
Sentinel 3: Homeworld ($2.99 - Universal) is the latest installment (released late in 2010) of the Sentinel tower defense franchise, offering more units to choose from, new maps, and new abilities that help you stave off wave after wave of alien enemies. The interface is like many in the fixed-path tower defense genre, letting you drag and drop units on the edges of a path to fortify your defenses against each wave of enemies. Sentinel 3 comes with a 20-level, 14-map campaign and an endless mode, and also offers in-app purchases if you want to add even more levels and maps.
Sentinel 3: Homeworld starts you off slow; you only get one type of unit plus a Commander that offers bonuses to nearby units. As the game progresses you'll be able to unlock more than 20 turrets, orbital ship weapons, and automated drones. The unique Commander unit can be upgraded as well, and you'll need his higher stats and special abilities to defeat some of the higher-level assaults. Once you've unlocked a few units, you can plan for the coming invasion by setting up loadouts of units that will work best against specific types of enemies.
Overall, with new turret types, the addition of the Commander, four skill levels, OpenFeint support, and original music from Specimen A, Sentinel 3: Homeworld makes for an excellent addition to the franchise. Anyone who likes tower defense games will enjoy this well-polished title.
TowerMadness ($2.99 iPhone - $7.99 iPad) has been around for a while now, but the unique challenge and several updates over time make it a must-have for tower defense fans. Featuring 3D graphics that look great on the Retina Display, TowerMadness challenges you to defend a flock of sheep from an onslaught of attacking aliens. You can view the action from above or use a reverse-pinch gesture to zoom in on the action. You'll play on 49 included maps, but you can purchase 28 expansion maps from within the game. A recent update added 5 more maps, and two new weapon upgrades to add to the replay value.
TowerMadness offers both campaign and endless game modes along with an easy tutorial mode in the beginning to get you comfortable with the gameplay. TowerMadness is a bit different from the other games in this collection in that it is an open field rather than a fixed-path tower defense game. This means you'll need to place your units in such a way that the enemies will need to navigate around them to reach your flock of sheep. You'll quickly learn that the best strategy is to create a sort of maze with your turrets, forcing enemies to pass by a mix of turrets several times. TowerMadness also includes replays so you can analyze your strategies to see which work the best.
Tower Madness has Game Center support with 29 achievements you can earn. You can also compare your scores with other players' online, adding additional challenge to an already challenging game.
While we continue to enjoy this title, we think the pricing may be a bit steep for a game that's been around as long as it has. The game seems to go through cycles of going on sale and recently was free for a time, so maybe you'll want to wait for the next sale. Still, if you like strategy games and want an incredibly deep tower defense experience, TowerMadness offers plenty to keep you interested.
Anomaly Warzone Earth

As your units move through the war-torn streets, you'll need to use repair and other abilities.
(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)
Anomaly Warzone Earth ($1.99 iPhone - $3.99 iPad) takes a different tack with the tower defense genre by having you play as the invading force, completing missions on a (somewhat) fixed path against a number of deadly turrets. Your heavily armored squad of vehicles and units has guns of their own, but as with every tower defense game, the more turrets you're up against, the harder it will be to stay healthy and reach your goal.

Fortunately, as you progress through the game, you'll gain abilities that will repair your vehicles and make it harder for enemies to hit you. You'll be able to deploy special weapons that are strong against specific enemy types, making it crucial to select your unit loadout wisely. You'll also have to select your path; Anomaly Warzone Earth has a tactical screen you'll visit before each quest to design a path through several city blocks of strategically placed turrets. Often the quest will require that you take out specific enemy types, so you'll need to design your path to maximize damage against them. To keep you well fortified, a drop ship occasionally drops health and other abilities that you'll need to tap to add to your arsenal.
Overall, Anomaly Warzone Earth is a very well-made and challenging game that turns traditional tower defense on its head. With excellent graphics and a unique take on the game genre, this title will keep you coming back to try new strategies against increasingly difficult enemies.

Firefox 7 beta now available

mozilla, firefox, browser, memshrink

A beta version of Mozilla’s Firefox 7 is now available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Despite releasing version 6 of the popular browser earlier this week, it’s the next iteration that many expect to solve persistent memory leak issues that have plagued the software for years.
Firefox 7 will introduce MemShrink, an initiative that began in June to eradicate the browser's memory inconsistencies. Mozilla developer Nicholas Nethercote claims that Firefox 7 uses less memory than the past three versions, between 20 and 50 percent less in some instances.
In addition to MemShrink, the new build also features better Javascript garbage collection. It's said to work more frequently now and should free up more memory when multiple tabs are open. The upcoming browser also implements Azure Direct2D for Canvas which increases canvas-based animations in HTML5.
There are also tools built into Firefox 7 that will help developers measure load times. Synchronization of bookmarks and passwords is said to be faster, too.
Version 7 is part of Mozilla’s recent rapid deployment of browsers. The developer released Firefox 5 in June and earlier this week it quietly launched Firefox 6 a day ahead of the planned release date.
Mozilla’s browser has been criticized for needing large amounts of RAM and then not freeing that memory once windows or tabs have been closed. Nethercote acknowledges these shortcomings, indicating that some versions were more efficient than others. He praised Firefox versions 3, 3.5 and 3.6 but said things deteriorated with version 4 partly because of all its new features, aggressive JavaScript garbage collection and image decoding.
The final version of Firefox 7 should be available by September 27.

Android crushes iPhone in Japan smartphone marketshare

Bloomberg reports “Android currently makes up about 57% of the Japanese smartphone market while Apple clocks in at around 38% so it’s definitely a pretty substantial gap between the two. Additionally something to make note of is that Apple alone is still the most popular smartphone manufacturer in the Land of the Rising sun shipping a noteworthy 1.69 million iPhones in Japan throughout 2010.” Interestingly, this might only the start of a very heated rivalry in the smartphone arena. But we have to commend Apple for standing really tough on the end where every known manufacturers have been throwing bombs of high-end Android smartphones, yet still they have commanded the most popular smartphone. The big questions is will Apple will be able to consistently maintained it’s device throned on top? Or will it be a landslide victory for Android?
Both camp start in “A”, Apple or Android? Let’s see how things will goes on and if you’ll remember iPhone 5 with Samsung Galaxy S II could be a very interesting match up. Who’ll win, well know –hold on.

Samsung Galaxy S II boasts one of the best smartphone cameras

Samsung Galaxy S II
Whoever it was had the idea to install a camera into a mobile phone was certainly some kind of genius. Today, more photographs are shot using a camera phone than are shot using a proper camera.
However, although most phones have a camera, most camera phones fall well short of what you get with even a cheap compact digital camera. Some lenses tend to be of very low quality, and the image capturing system can be decidedly second rate. Although some people are satisfied with the results they achieve from such devices, they will bring tears to anyone who enjoys real photography.
Fortunately many phone manufacturers have come to realise that it pays to add quality to the cameras that they include with their phones, but these quality cameras are only found in the higher end smartphones.
There are several features that are important if you are to capture reasonable shots with your mobile. One of these is the sensor resolution. Nowadays it is quite usual to find cameras with resolution of 5 or more megapixels. Resolution isn’t everything, but it is a good place to start.
Equally important is the quality of the lens. Some camera phone lenses are high quality and some are very poor. If you can then it is advisable to find cameras with lenses manufactured by specialist lens manufacturers.
Auto-focusing capability in a phone camera is an absolute must. Most of the shots taken on a phone tend to be taken quickly and on the fly. There simply isn’t the time (or the inclination) to accurately focus the camera and the sad fact is that, unless auto-focusing is used, the picture will be blurred.
Next on the list of important features is an LED or Xenon flash. Mobile phone cameras are often used in dimly lit surroundings and without flash great photo-opportunities are often missed.
Many phone cameras come with a wide range of additional applications such as face recognition, smile detection, scene modes and so forth, though these are more fun and useful than necessary. You do not need them in order to achieve a reasonable image.
One of the best cameras is that found on the Samsung Galaxy S II. With 8 megapixels, autofocus, LED flash, a great lens and many additional features it ticks all the appropriate boxes.

Samsung Ace Gets Gingerbread Update

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830
Finally one of Samsung mass-loved Android device –the Ace is getting a Gingerbread update, if you would remember the Gingerbread ROM for this handset have premature outing back few months ago. Samsung has started rolling out the Ace’s Gingerbread update via Kies, according to SamFirmware. Unfortunately, the update is limited to countries like Russia and Poland however, it’s said that the update will be available to other countries soon. If you’ll be asking the new functionality added by the Android 2.3.3 version for the Ace, there’s no relevant report for now but you’ll get for sure the usual Gingerbread spice for your Samsung Ace. Watch out.

Android 40% Share of US Mobile Subscribers

ComScore report claims that Android continues to top 40-percent of U.S. mobile subscribers. And as we see, wouldn’t it be arguably interesting if we could mapped that percentage across the U.S. states? Gladly, before we speak –Jumptap a mobile ad network have just plotted a color-coded chart to show which mobile platforms are popular by state and it’s patiently waiting after the cut.
South and Southwest regions were tagged for majority Android subscribers while Steve Jobs’ clan were seated on the Midwest and New England. Interestingly, the Android-favored region is the hometown Apple and Microsoft, we can’t blame them if they have to choose freedom, flash-support and expandable memory.
In addition, Blackberry surprisingly manages to catch up based on the infographic taking Northern states. There were also few neutral states that is seated just below the Android-ruled green states.
Anyways, few questions are left for us to answer, what do you think of the infographic data? Do you think your state was colored correctly?

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE phone codenamed Celox

Did we already told you about the possibility of Verizon Samsung Galaxy S II? If you don’t remember, previously we told you about the most successful Galaxy unit or merely the best of it class might be on its way to Big Red’s backyard. And if we’ll believe Paul Mueller in three weeks time that’s August 12th to be exact Verizon might be launching the LTE-inclined Samsung Galaxy S II under the codename Samsung Function and might also be Attain and Within when it was dropped on other networks. And as we speak, another rumored version of Samsung Galaxy S II codename “Celox” have just appeared in South Korea where it features specs and images.
Verizon Samsung Galaxy S II will sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor while running Android Gingerbread, sports a 4.5-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, and boasts 16GB of internal memory, with a microSD slot offering an extra 32GB. It’s battery life is considerably improved since this S II now fitted with 1750mAh battery compared to the smaller Galaxy S II’s 1650mAH pack. Completing a perfect multimedia package it has 8MP rear-facing camera, along with a 2MP sensor up front.
This Android handset also features 800MHz LTE support  which is blistering up to 50Mbps upstream and 100Mbps downstream. Unfortunately, this is too fast for Verizon and AT&T which only support 700MHz LTE –you can immediately makes assumptions that this model wasn’t aimed for US, but instead might be a European version where network LTE supports 800MHz.

Dell Latitude E5410 laptop latest Reviews and Specs

Dell Latitude E5410 laptop latest Reviews:

The Dell Latitude E5410 is a 14.1-inch business notebook with an affordable $809.99 starting price. The E5410 is a step above the Vostro 1014 with a greater focus on business needs, but priced lower than the Latitude E6410. The Dell Latitude E5410 looks a lot like its bigger brother the E6410, but with a plastic shell instead of metal alloy. This notebook is for Dell what the lower-priced R-series ThinkPad is for Lenovo. It gives businesses another option, with a greater business focus, over the standard consumer-oriented models. From a design standpoint the E5410 looks a lot like the E6410, but with a plastic body. The design is very business, with black and grey panels, squared off edges, and a pointing stick located on the keyboard. Dell kept the look and feel almost exactly like its E6410, instead of giving it the routine of most small-business notebooks which look or feel much cheaper.

Dell Latitude 2120 latest laptop Reviews and Specs

The blue exterior is actually a rubber coating; it has an inlaid square pattern and feels soft yet durable. It extends to the underside of the machine as well, save for the battery. As a computer intended for business use, this might not have been the best color choice though. The 2120 is constructed out of high-strength ABS plastic. The matte black plastic has a slightly granular texture and is quite solid. Keeping in tradition with business notebooks, there is no glossy plastic used on the exterior.

Asus U56E-BBL5 laptop latest reviews, specs, features

Asus U56E-BBL5 laptop latest reviews, specs, features:

The 15.6-inch screen has a 1,366 by 768 resolution display, which translates to 720p HD viewing. If you're looking to get full 1080p HD, then you'll have to utilize the HDMI port or the Wireless Display 2.0 (WiDi 2.0) option, which can wirelessly stream your computer's content onto an HDTV provided you have a Netgear Push2TV receiver (a $99 option). Your HD content, however, will be limited to digital downloads or streaming video as the U56E-BBL5 only comes with a DVD-RW drive—no Blu-ray. If you are looking for Blu-ray and a 1080p HD screen to watch it on, then you'll have to pay a premium for a laptop.

At the top of the list of features for the U56E-BBL5 is WiMAX, a 4G wireless subscription service available in major metropolitan areas (over 54 cities). Wi-Fi 802.11n is also available, as well as an Ethernet jack. Other options include a card reader (MMC/SD/SD HC), VGA, audio jacks, two USB 2.0 ports, and a USB 3.0 port, which will allow you to connect faster hard drives. The Asus U56E-BBL5 comes with 640GB 5,400rpm worth of storage space, which should be enough to store all your media. The U56E-BBL5 is equipped with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor and 6GB of memory. On PCMark 7 (1,920) it scored 146points below the Lenovo V570-1066A9U, which is not a huge difference in scores. In multimedia tests the U56E-BBL5's scores were nearly identical to that of the Lenovo V570-1066A9U times on our Handbrake video encoding test (1 minute 55seconds) and Photoshop CS5 image filtering test (4:13). Cinebench R11.5 garnered the same 2.6 score.

ViewSonic readies dual-OS ViewPad 10pro tablet

Unveiled earlier this year, ViewSonic is finally gearing up to launch its ViewPad 10pro with a release window of late August through mid-September. In a day of iPad clones, it's nice to something even mildly unique, and the 10pro certainly fits the bill. The device is powered by Intel's Oak Trail platform, which includes the new 1.5GHz Atom Z670 processor and supports the ability to run multiple operating systems in a simultaneous fashion.
ViewSonic has taken advantage of that functionality by providing access to both Windows 7 and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. To be clear, the tablet doesn't dual-boot the operating systems in the conventional sense, but Google's mobile OS runs on top of Windows like an application. To quote ViewSonic's own words: "Users need to simply tap on the Android icon to make a seamless switch between business productivity and…entertainment."
Although that will surely attract some shoppers, Windows-based tablets haven't been particularly successful so far and we're not sure why ViewSonic opted for Android 2.3 instead of 3.x Honeycomb, which is specifically designed for tablets and has been available on other devices since February. Beyond Honeycomb, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is due sometime toward the close of 2011, and we're not sure if the 10pro will be updated.
Besides Intel's new Oak Trail parts and the dual-OS functionality, the ViewPad 10pro has a typical spec sheet. Features include a 10-inch 1024x600 capacitive display, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, USB 2.0 and Mini-HDMI ports, audio jacks, support for up to 32GB microSD cards, a 1.3MP front-mounted webcam, and up to eight hours of battery life. The device measures 10.7 x 6.7 x 0.58 inches and weighs just shy of two pounds.
At least two configurations will be offered at launch in the US this month: one with Windows 7 Home Premium and a 16GB SSD for $599 and another with Windows 7 Professional and a 32GB SSD for $699. According to Hexus, general availability in Europe will take a few weeks longer and there will also be two models: a Wi-Fi-only unit for approximately £539.99 and a 3G-equipped version for £599.99 (no word on storage differences).

Logitech unveils $40 G-series gaming mouse, the G300

Logitech today announced its next-gen G-series gaming mouse, the G300, promising to give you greater gaming precision and plenty of features at an affordable price. The mouse itself has a 2500 DPI optical sensor that works on a wide variety of surfaces and sports an ambidextrous design that does away with the usual thumb buttons, but still gives you nine customizable controls you can tailor to your gaming or computing needs.
Additionally, the Logitech Gaming Mouse G300 lets you store up to three game or player profiles in its onboard memory, so you can run the mouse without software or move it between computers without having to reconfigure each time. The G300 also includes an on-board lighting system that you can set to one of seven colors for each profile, making it easier to identify which configuration you're using at any given moment.

The included configuration software also works with G-Series keyboards and headsets, so you can create macros once and share them with other Logitech devices. There's no weight-tuning system, interchangeable grips, wireless connectivity or any other perks like that, but with an MSRP of $40 the G300 is a solid option for gamers with simpler needs. Logitech says the Gaming Mouse G300 will be available in the U.S. and Europe in September.

EA limiting digital and retail launch copies

star wars, ea, digital download, the old republic, gamescon
Electronic Arts has revealed that they will purposely limit the number of copies of Star Wars: The Old Republic available at launch for retail and digital download. The news comes from an EA representative during a demonstration at Gamescon, as reported by Gameinformer.
EA claims that they want everyone to have a smooth experience with the new MMO title and if this means limiting sales in order to keep servers from crashing, so be it. EA isn’t concerned with simply selling a ton of copies but rather keeping gamers happy. After all, the company only needs to sell half a million copies of the game to be profitable.
There are a lot of factors at play here and the news can be interpreted in many different lights.
The representative said that EA has a set number of copies to move before they discontinue sales to increase server capacity, but of course that number isn’t being released.
Such an announcement could very well be a marketing tactic to acquire more pre-orders. It’s also not a bad move to garner more media attention for the game, although it likely doesn’t need much help. Star Wars is a huge franchise and many people have been waiting for another quality MMO to challenge World of Warcraft.
One would assume that EA knows how many pre-orders are in place and given the popularity of the title, it would only make sense from a consumer’s standpoint for EA to deploy additional servers before the launch rather than upsetting potential buyers when sales cease. The EA rep was unsure how long it would take to deploy additional servers in this worst-case scenario.
On the flip side, many people will see this as a good move on EA’s part, as they are looking out for the customer’s best gaming interest. After all, who wants to try and play a game on a laggy, crash-prone server? If the game doesn't sell enough copies to require more servers, then this was all for not.
There is currently no release date for The Old Republic but a beta is said to begin in September. BioWare is likely planning to drop the title in time for the lucrative holiday buying season, although if sales are halted, that wouldn’t matter much.
Do you plan to buy The Old Republic, and if so, will you be pre-ordering now in light of this news?

Firefox 7 beta now available, final build due next month

mozilla, firefox, browser, memshrink

High-End iPad

Motorola showed off its new Xoom tablet at CES, which is packed impressive hardware and also runs on Android 3.0.
There’s no shortage of new would-be iPad competitors, but so far this is one of the most impressive models. Xoom consists of a 10.1-inch display and uses Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor.
The Motorola Xoom will be released in March and comes with support for both Wi-Fi and 3G. During the second quarter, Motorola will also release an upgrade to Xoom, which provides support for the 4G network. You can hook up a variety of devices to the Xoom via a microUSB port, hdmi, headphone jack, or the SD memory card slot. On the back is a camera with a resolution of five megapixels and an LED flash. In addition, the camera can shoot in HD resolution.
Xoom was one of the few tablets at CES to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Since Xoom comes out in March it coincides with general availalility of Android 3.0.

HP gives $50 app credit to TouchPad

touchpad, tablet, hp, hp touchpad, marketplace, app catalog
Early adopters of HP’s TouchPad tablet have a little less to be upset with after seeing prices drop sharply in recent days. Over the weekend HP announced that qualifying early adopters would receive a $50 credit for use in the App Catalog.
HP has offered multiple price reductions since launching the TouchPad on July 1. The first of several kickbacks came in the form of a $50 rebate through July 31 for loyal buyers. If you could prove ownership of a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, or Pixi phone you qualified for the mail-in rebate on a 32 GB TouchPad.
A $50 price reduction was announced last week followed by a weekend-only additional $50 cut (August 5-7). Additionally, webOSroundup found a $100 Staples coupon for a total of $200 off the original price, bringing down the 16GB TouchPad to about $300.
The latest offer from HP is valid for TouchPad owners in the US that purchased a tablet between July 1 and August 4 either directly through HP or participating resellers. Qualifying users will receive an email this week with more details. As such, HP recommends that owners have a valid email address associated with their tablet. The credit is good until December 31, 2011 and stacks with the previously mentioned early adopter mail-in rebate.
The recent price drops, rebates and credits are likely a sign that HP is trying to clear stock on the original TouchPad to make room for the new TouchPad 4G that was announced last month. The new device will have a faster 1.5 GHz processor, 32 GB of storage, integrated GPS and as the name suggests, will take advantage of 4G wireless networks. As of writing, a release date for the 4G tablet has not been set.

Windows 7 to be on 42 percent of PCs by year's end

microsoft, windows, windows 7
Windows 7 is on track to become the most popular operating system by the end of 2011, according to research firm Gartner. The current-generation Windows OS will find a home on 42 percent of PCs and will ship installed on 94 percent of new computers sold worldwide.
Windows 7 adoption in enterprise markets has been somewhat slow but deployment is expected to pick up in most markets as we move towards the end of the year. Other volatile regions are anticipating a slower deployment for various economic and political reasons.
"Steady improvements in IT budgets in 2010 and 2011 are helping to accelerate the deployment of Windows 7 in enterprise markets in the U.S. and Asia/Pacific, where Windows 7 migrations started in large volume from 4Q10," said Annette Jump, research director at Gartner. "However, the economic uncertainties in Western Europe, political instability in selected Middle East and Africa (MEA) countries and the economic slowdown in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 will likely lead to slightly late and slow deployment for Windows 7 across those regions."
Gartner believes that Windows 7 will be the last Microsoft OS that gets deployed through traditional means. Within the next five years, they suspect that many organizations will move toward cloud computing and virtualization to deliver desktop environments to employees.
The retail version of Windows 7 launched in October 2009 and became the highest grossing pre-order in Amazon history. The successor to Windows Vista, 7 has increased in ownership rather quickly in less than two years. As of two months ago, Windows 7 was installed on one in four computers.
The adoption of Windows 7 has caused the continual decline of Windows XP, which fell below the 50 percent mark last month. Microsoft will continue to support the aging OS until April 8, 2014 when all support and updates will be terminated. Windows Vista usage was down to only 9 percent as of July 2011.

Acer launches 7-inch Honeycomb tablet, Iconia Tab A100

Acer's tablet arsenal has grown one device stronger today with the arrival of its Iconia Tab A100, purportedly the first 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb slate to wash up on North American shores. Priced at $329.99 (8GB) and $349.99 (16GB), the A100 undercuts the cheapest 10.1-inch Iconia A500 by approximately $50 to $70. Despite that price reduction, very few features are sacrificed -- besides three inches of display, of course.
The A100 measures half an inch thick, weighs just shy of a pound and packs the same dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC used by its chubbier sibling. It carries a 1024x600 capacitive touchscreen, a 5MP rear-facing auto-focusing camera with an LED flash, a 2MP fixed-focus front-mounted webcam. Battery life is quoted at 4-5 hours when browsing the Web or streaming video over Wi-Fi (roughly half of the A500) and 4.5 when playing 720p videos locally.
As noted, the A100 is powered by Honeycomb, but Acer has "enhanced" Android's user interface with a graphical overlay. The company also provides its "clear.fi" service, cross-platform media streaming solution that allows DLNA-compliant devices to access digital content from another computer or the cloud. It's worth noting that network access will require a Wi-Fi connection as there doesn't seem to be any support for WWAN -- just like the A500.
Other specifications include 1GB of DDR2 RAM, support for 32GB MicroSD cards, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a dock port, a micro-USB 2.0 port, a micro-HDMI output with support for 1080p content and dual displays, a hardware screen orientation lock, as well as a gyro-meter and e-compass. Optional accessories include a $69.99 Bluetooth keyboard, a $79.99 dock with an IR remote, and a $29.99 protective case. Units are available across North America today.

HP Touchpad price slashed to $399

touchpad, tablet, slate, hp
Merely a week after offering consumers a deep discount on its Touchpad tablet line, HP has decided to make the $100 price cut a permanent one. HP's 16GB and 32GB Touchpad models will now weigh in at $399 and $499, respectively. The price changes are effective immediately and are currently available at HP's web store.
Apple itself has stated that its own iPad is "aggresively priced" at $499 and despite iSuppli's claim that Apple also has the monopoly on tablet cost efficiency, HP seems to think it can undercut its superstar competitor. Making serious on its promise to become one of the top two tablet manufacturers, HP's American Channel Chief, Stephen DiFranco, says the price cuts will make the device more competitive. Although there are no official numbers, DiFranco claims the sales were "encouraging". The response was apparently so encouraging, HP seems to believe it has found the magic price point for its tablet.
This news also follows a substantial Web OS update (3.0.2), also courtesy of HP. The update attempts to address many of the performance issues that continue to tarnish the Touchpad. Some of those issues were outlined in our very own review of the tablet, although there was plenty to like about the device as well. This is the first Touchpad update to have been delivered OTA (over the air) and should have found its way to Touchpads everywhere days ago.
In addition to the price cut, HP is still offering a $50 credit for those who purchased the tablet before the sale. Please be aware that the credit is only applicable to purchasing apps in the HP app store, but that is still an unusually generous consolotion to early adopters.

America's Are In the World Of cell phone

smartphone, united states, research, cell phone
The latest mobile phone study affirms just how dependent many Americans are on their cell phones. Nearly 50 percent of young adults reported having trouble doing something because they did not have their phone nearby and 20 percent of all surveyed experienced frustration because their phone took too long to download something. The new findings come courtesy of Pew Internet & American Life Project and reveal a lot information about the average phone owner.
83 percent of Americans own some form of mobile phone and more than 50 percent of those have used a phone in the last month to retrieve information on the spot.
Remember that time you pretended to place or receive a phone call to avoid talking with someone nearby? Well you aren’t alone, as 13 percent of respondents have done the same thing.
70 percent of young adults between the age of 18 and 29 have used a phone for entertainment while they were bored.
Aside from entertainment and convenience, handsets can be a valuable tool during an emergency. 40 percent of everyone questioned said they found themselves in an emergency situation where having their phone was useful.
Data for the study was obtained via phone interviews of 2,277 adults over the age of 18. Calls were conducted between April 26 and May 22 2011. This is likely the same phone interview that was used to determine Internet activities of adults earlier this month which revealed that search and email remain the top online activities in the US.
It’s unfortunate that the survey didn’t poll people under the age of 18 as it would be interesting to see how younger teenagers would skew the results.

Ubisoft tweaks Driver's always-on DRM, Skyrim to use Steam

As with most of the company's major game launches since early last year, Ubisoft planned to lace the PC version of Driver: San Francisco with its pesky always-on DRM. The mechanism has appeared in titles including Assassin's Creed II, Silent Hunter V, The Settlers 7, as well as Splinter Cell: Conviction and it always disappoints gamers. Without fail, many would-be customers have vowed to boycott the new Driver over the developer's invasive digital control system.
In response to the disgruntled upwelling, Ubisoft said Driver: San Francisco would "no longer include" the DRM that requires a permanent Internet connection -- a half-truth. Although you won't have to stay connected through the duration of your playtime, you will require an active Internet connection so the game can perform an authentication check each time you want to launch it. Once that validation has completed, you can choose to play Driver offline if so desired.
Although that's an improvement, it doesn't address the primary concern of users who criticize the always-on DRM, because it still requires an Internet connection to play the game -- if only briefly. Someone playing at a hotel or grandma's house might not have access to the Web, thereby preventing them from launching the game. On a scale of draconian DRM mechanisms, Ubisoft has effectively turned the dial from 10 to 9, and we're not sure what good that'll do.
As with previous instances, users have questioned the effectiveness of Ubisoft's controversial DRM. All of the above games were swiftly cracked and uploaded to torrent sites, making the whole effort seem fruitless. Pirates are unaffected by the DRM while paying customers have to jump through hoops, and Ubisoft has to waste resources developing said hoops. Although it seems pointless to the casual onlooker, Ubisoft is convinced that its DRM is a "success."
Speaking with PC Gamer a few weeks ago, Ubisoft said the studio has witnessed "a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection, and from that point of view the requirement is a success." Unfortunately, the developer didn't offer any hard figures to back that claim and most of the commenters don't buy it. Some even admit that they wound up downloading a cracked version of games like AC2 after purchasing a legitimate copy.
In a separate, unrelated announcement today, Bethesda revealed that the PC version of its upcoming Elder Scrolls title will use Valve's Steamworks platform for DRM. As with Fallout: New Vegas, that goes for copies purchased through retailers and Steam itself. Once you activate the game, you can play the title in Steam's offline mode without an Internet connection. We assume Steam will also be used to serve achievements, patches and downloadable content.

Intel confirms 8MB bug in 320 Series SSDs

Three weeks after replicating the so-called "8MB bug," Intel has published a firmware update (4PC10362) that solves the issue. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to recover data lost on glitched drives, so you'll have to cut your losses if you want to revive the unit. It's also worth noting that the update comes in the ISO format. If you need disc burning software, we recommend ImgBurn.
Our original story is below:
Shoppers beware: Intel's 320 Series solid-state drives reportedly ship with a glitch that could drastically reduce the drive's capacity. Flocking to Intel's official discussion board, many users have complained about their spanking new flash drives suddenly dropping from their full capacity to only 8MB, effectively blocking all stored data and making the drive useless. After accumulating numerous pages of user complaints, a member of Intel's Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group acknowledged the flaw earlier this week.
"Intel is aware of the customer sightings on Intel SSD 320 Series. If you experience any issue with your Intel SSD, please contact your Intel representative or Intel customer support (via web: www.intel.com or phone: www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contact/phone). We will provide an update when we have more information." The so called "8MB bug" appears after a power failure or system crash and it's unclear whether a hardware defect is to blame or if the problem can be solved with a firmware update.
Although users haven't discovered a way to recover data on a drive that experiences the 8MB bug, some people have been able to start from scratch by wiping the drive's contents with utilities such as HDDErase and Parted Magic. That's probably the last thing you want to hear if you just finished typing a 200-page thesis, so hang tight and Intel might offer some recovery options. This isn't the company's first time combating a serious SSD glitch, having shipped a bugged firmware update in 2009 that bricked many X25-Ms.

Corsair introduces 90GB SSDs priced at $159 and $199

ssd, corsair, force series gt, force series 3
Corsair has announced new additions to its Force Series 3 and Force Series GT range of solid-state drives. Touting these as the world's first 90GB SATA 6Gb/s devices, the Force Series GT offers read speeds of 555MB/s and write speeds of 505MB/s, while the Force Series 3 is just slightly behind with read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 500MB/s.
Both drives use MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips, though the Force Series 3 is said to use asynchronous flash memory while the Force Series GT uses ONFI synchronous flash memory and is supposedly "particularly adept at reading and writing non-compressible data, such as video and music files."
A SandForce SF-2200 controller powers the new drives and the two of them offer a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rating of 2 million hours.
The Force Series 3 drive is available now for $159, or about $1.77 per GB, and the Force Series GT for $199. They come bundled with 3.5-inch adapters for use in desktops and are backed by a three-year warranty from Corsair.
