Steam launches holiday sale, discounts 1000+ games

With Christmas only five days away, Steam has finally launched its 2010 holiday sale, discounting over a thousand games. The event will run through January 2 and each day will bring a new batch of sales. Today's featured titles include Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ($6.79), Prince of Persia (all titles 75% off), Super Meat Boy ($3.75), F.E.A.R. bundle ($9.99), and more.

Alongside the daily deals, Steam has cut prices on many publisher catalogs, not to mention the various greatly discounted bundles. For example, the 2K Mega Pack ($79.99) offers over three dozen games and expansions including BioShock 2, Mafia II, and Borderlands. Similar bundles are available for THQ, Bethesda, Square Enix / Eidos, Epic Games, Valve and many others.

If you happen to need a last minute gift for the casual gamer in your family, it's worth mentioning that more than 150 indie titles are also on sale in various $5 packs. As a reminder, today marks the conclusion of Steam's 'Treasure Hunt', so be sure to complete your objectives and log on before the end of the day for a chance to win 100 games of your choosing.

Sandy Bridge processors on sale at Malaysian retailers

Intel's Sandy Bridge processors aren't due for release until early 2011, likely coinciding with January's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but some retailers have jumped the gun. According to Lowyat.net, Malaysian retailers Compuzone, StarTec and Viewnet have begun selling several versions of the next-generation chips along with LGA 1155 motherboards.

The retailers have listed six Sandy Bridge processors for sale, including the 2.8GHz Core i5 2300 ($185), 3.10GHz 2400 ($195), 3.3GHz 2500, 3.3GHz 2500K, as well as the 3.4GHz Core i7 2600 ($300) and 2600K. If you're curious, the 'K' versions feature an unlocked multiplier for easier overclocking. We don't see a price for these yet, but you can expect to pay a premium.

Lowyat.net also discovered a few photos of Sandy Bridge chips and motherboards on Compuzone's Facebook page, but they appear to have been removed or blocked from public view. We're not sure if the retailers have received clearance from Intel, but it wouldn't be the first time a major tech product was launched prematurely -- especially in Asian markets.

Microsoft sells 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices in six weeks

Microsoft has announced that it has sold over 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices through its various partners in the first six weeks the mobile operating system has been on the market. This is the first time the software giant has revealed sales numbers; until now, the company has been avoiding the question, leading many to believe the results were abysmal.
Microsoft says these early sales figures meet the company's expectations for a new mobile OS in an already crowded market. The company is working on multiple updates to Windows Phone 7, the first of which is rumored to be landing next month.
It's important to note that the 1.5 million number represents sales of Windows Phone 7 devices from OEMs to carriers, as opposed to devices sold from carriers to customers. Windows Phone 7 devices went on sale in Europe on October 21 and in the US on November 8. In the US, AT&T and T-Mobile offer Windows Phone 7 GSM devices. In January 2011, Verizon and Sprint are expected to begin selling CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices.
"I think our expectations are realistic for a new platform," Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, said in a statement. "We started fresh with Windows Phone 7, and it's a different kind of phone. Measuring for success is more long term than short term. We launched with many of the top mobile operators in the world, and even more in the coming year in 2011. We have 18,000 developers who are developing for our marketplace. It's just getting better and better."

Skype outage affects millions of users

Popular VoIP service Skype appears to be suffering an outage this morning as many users complain of connection issues. The company hasn't released an estimated number of affected users, but ReadWriteWeb reports that usage numbers have fallen from 21 million to 10 million, which isn't isolated to any language or region.

Skype has officially acknowledged the problem but hasn't provided much information about the cause. It should supposedly be resolved in a few hours. "Some of you may have problems signing into Skype -- we're investigating, and we're sorry for the disruption to your conversations," the company said three hours ago via its Twitter account.

Interestingly, Skype's status monitor (heartbeat.skype.com) doesn't show any problems. All services are said to be working normally, with the last known issue dated Thursday, December 16. On that day, Skype reported "sign in and registration" issues among other difficulties, but it's unclear whether there is any correlation with today's outage.

Last month, Skype reached a milestone of 25 million simultaneous users. Many of those people rely on the service for work and other important duties, so the outage is undoubtedly a major inconvenience. The last major interruption occurred in 2007 and took 12-24 hours to resolve. As of writing, I remained unable to connect to the service.

Update: Skype said the issue stems from a number of "supernodes" being taken down. Supernodes supposedly act like phone directories for Skype and there are usually plenty available. Today, many were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype, so the service may appear offline for those users.

"Our engineers are creating new 'mega-supernodes' as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal," the company explained.

Craigslist closes all adult services worldwide

Just months after closing the "adult services" category on its US classified sites, Craigslist has removed adult services from all of its 700 international sites in 70 countries. The removal of the adult services section altogether is the culmination of an almost three-year legal battle with state attorneys generals, according to Wired.
The section first appeared on Craigslist as "erotic services." In 2008, the online classified service yielded to pressure from a group of attorney generals from 17 states, which accused the website of enabling prostitution and child trafficking. Craigslist tried to stem the illegal activity by renaming the section to "adult services" and requiring those creating listings to submit a verifiable phone number as well as a verifiable credit card to pay a $10 listing fee. In May 2009, adult services posts started being screened for illegal content by attorneys. In the first year, more than 700,000 ads were rejected by attorneys.
That wasn't enough, and Craigslist killed the US section in September 2010. Some saw that move as a blow to free speech and Craigslist actually slapped a black "Censored" label over where the section used to reside on its website.
Now, the section is gone on all the Craigslist websites. Of course, posters will just migrate to a different classifieds section, so we're not sure the general attorneys have truly accomplished anything.

Microsoft to relaunch PC gaming with Windows 8

Those who claim PC gaming is dead mainly blame Microsoft. Ever since the company launched the Xbox, it has let the Windows PC gaming platform fall over the wayside. Since the software giant's number one product is Windows, the company's number one gaming platform is still the PC, no matter how much of a success the Xbox platform becomes. Rumors are now suggesting that things will really start to change with Windows 8.
"Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming," an anonymous source told TechRadar. "Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS."
Of course, we've heard things like this before: PC gaming was supposed to get a boost with the launch of Windows Vista, and there were definitely improvements, but none were particularly noteworthy. Meanwhile, multiple games from Microsoft did not receive PC versions, including Gears of War 2 and every Halo game released after Halo 2.
Two months ago, Microsoft said that it was "doubling down" on PC games. The company launched a browser-based Windows store for PC games called Games for Windows Marketplace, but it hardly made a big splash.
The fact of the matter is that Valve's Steam dominates the PC gaming market already, and it's thus difficult for Microsoft to do anything revolutionary. Including features directly in Windows, while making sure to avoid anti-trust issues, is the only way the software giant could really make a difference. The company of course currently refuses to talk about Windows 8, so as with most rumors, we'll just have to wait and see till the time is right, or till something leaks out.

Americans can't live without high-speed Internet, or e-mail

Adults agree that the expansion of high-speed Internet has had the greatest technological impact on society over the past decade. A Zogby International interactive survey polled 1,950 adults from December 8 to December 10, 2010 to ask them what technology they found to have made the biggest difference in their lives.
High-speed Internet came in first place at 24 percent, followed close behind by Facebook at 22 percent, and Google settled for third place with 10 percent. Men and those over 55 said high-speed Internet has had the greatest impact on society while women and adults under the age of 55 found Facebook had the most impact. Of the technologies most said they cannot live without, high-speed Internet came in first at 28 percent, e-mail was second at 18 percent, while Facebook only grabbed 3 percent among all adults. 15 percent of young adults (aged 18-24), however, said they cannot live without Facebook.
24 percent of Americans believe the greatest technological advancement for the next year will be in home entertainment while only 16 percent believe it will be in general computing. In the next decade (by the year 2020), the following will take place:
  • 43 percent of Americans believe we will see regular use of stem cells and cloning techniques to create human organs for transplant
  • 40 percent of Americans believe we will see computer chips implanted in people to monitor their health
  • 40 percent of Americans believe we will see robots capable of performing manual labor jobs
  • 36 percent of Americans believe we will see virtual reality incorporated into home entertainment
Zogby International said slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender, and education to more accurately reflect the overall US population. The data was given a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percentage points.

Elliptic Labs brings Minority Report interface to the iPad

If you liked the Minority Report interface demonstrated on Microsoft's Kinect motion controller, you'll like this one for Apple's iPad. Norwegian company Elliptic Labs is going to demo its touchless user interface for iPads at CES 2011. For now, we'll have to make do with the video embedded below.
"The idea is that you use touchless gestures to operate primary functions of a docked tablet in situations like when you have wet or greasy hands in the kitchen," Elliptic Labs CEO Stian Aldrin told Mobile Magazine. "In general tablets are made for being handheld. When it is docked you are often walking or standing further away, and then using a finger on the screen involves a change of modality. Rather than bending down, leaning forward or picking it up you can use larger movements a little bit further away to do things like volume up or next song without changing modality."
The technology emits an ultrasound field around the device that detects your hand movements and takes them into account. The iPad has a small screen, so standing back and using it without touching it seems a little pointless. Aldrin does, however, mention one use case that makes soem sense: when you're cooking and you're using the iPad to look at a recipe. Can you think of any others?

EA: microtransactions are more profitable than in-game ads

In an interview with Edge, Electronic Arts revealed that in-game ads aren't as profitable as originally expected. Ben Cousins, EA's general manager of free-to-play operations, told the publication that the mega-publisher "[isn't] getting much from ad revenue at all," and that the in-game advertising model hasn't grown as quickly as people expected it to. Instead, Cousins explained that microtransactions are more profitable.
EA tested both models with its free-to-play cartoony shooter Battlefield Heroes, and while virtual sales exploded, advertisements have been somewhat of a flop. "If you think about how fast the virtual goods business has grown in the last year or so, it's been much quicker and become a much more reliable source of revenue," Cousins said in reference to Farmville, which has been wildly successful thanks to microtransactions.
EA plans to release a new free-to-play Battlefield title called "Battlefield Play4Free" next spring, which will ditch Battlefield Heroes' cartoonish graphics and allow gamers to purchase items and upgrades with real money. Play4Free will scale up to 32 players, support vehicular combat, and include popular maps from Battlefield 2 as well as the classes and factions in Bad Company 2. You can register to become a beta tester on the official site

Netflix working on HTML5 standard for streaming video

Netflix has officially embraced HTML5 video. The company doesn't just want to just push forward with its own flavor of HTML5 video, the way Apple did with its iOS devices, but it wants to build an industry-wide consensus on issues like video codecs and container formats used for browser-based video delivery as well as DRM content protection. Because many of these issues haven't been resolved yet, Netflix has yet to adopt HTML5 video, but the streaming website is clearly distinguishing itself from Apple by putting emphasis on cross-platform standards.
Netflix wants to actively get involved in standards bodies like the MPEG committee for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), which is trying to come up with a standard for adaptive bitrate streaming to browsers with HTML5 support. The committee, which also includes companies like Microsoft and Apple, will get help from Netflix beginning early next year, by means of a profile describing a limited subset of the MPEG DASH standard.
Netflix currently uses Microsoft's Silverlight to deliver video to PC-based web browsers, but has to leverage various other technologies to support Linux-based CE devices, mobile phones, and tablets like the iPad. HTML5 video would help to simplify the roll-out of its online video service across different devices and would also help CE partners and end users.
"What's still missing is how to address the last item - how exactly to tie advanced streaming standards (MPEG DASH and others) into the HTML5 video tag," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. "To this end, we are starting to get involved in the community with the goal to help shape a great standard that will be useful to everybody involved in building browsers, CE devices and services for streaming video over the Internet. We know that achieving this goal will take a while. In the meantime, we’ll continue to evolve our own streaming technology to make sure our members have the best streaming experience possible and to get to as many platforms as we can."

Financial Times names Steve Jobs Person of the Year

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has been named Person of the Year by The Financial Times. Love him or hate him, it's pretty much widely accepted that Jobs has managed to make Apple very successful in the last few years.
"When Steven Paul Jobs first hit the headlines, he was younger even than Mark Zuckerberg is now," according to The Financial Times. "Long before it was cool to be a nerd, his formative role in popularising the personal computer, and Apple's initial public offering on Wall Street – which came when Mr Jobs was still only 25 – made him the tech industry's first rock star. Now, three decades on, he has secured his place in the foremost ranks of the West Coast tech titans who have done so much to shape the world around the turn of the millennium. Long-time nemesis Bill Gates may be richer and, at his peak, arguably exerted greater sway, thanks to his monopoly over the world's PC software. But the Microsoft co-founder has left the stage to devote his life and fortune to good works. It is Mr Jobs who now holds the spotlight."

Last week, Time Magazine named Mark Zuckerberg Person of the Year. Which publication do you agree with, if either?

Facebook passes Yahoo, becomes world's third largest website

It was only a matter of time, and now it's finally happened. Facebook has passed Yahoo in traffic to become the third largest website in the world, according to recent numbers from Comscore. Facebook only just surpassed Yahoo, grabbing 648 million visitors compared to 630 million for Yahoo in November 2010, but the overall trend is the impressive part.
The top two spots are still held by Google (970 million worldwide visitors) and Microsoft (869 million worldwide visitors), respectively, though Facebook is rapidly gaining on them. Microsoft has clearly been growing much more steadily in recent months; Google's traffic seems to be flattening out. Facebook is undoubtedly growing the fastest while Yahoo simply isn't growing at all. It looks like the top three spots are going to be changing in the next few months. How and when they change might end up shocking some people.

Three months ago, Facebook passed Yahoo to become the second largest video site. Two months ago, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz admitted that Facebook could one day become Yahoo's number one competitor.

Skype to release video-calling for mobile devices?

Skype, the company known for providing voice and video calling services over the Internet, might be getting ready to release video calling for mobile devices that have a front-facing camera. Skype has been hinting for a while now that it will be making video-related announcements at CES 2011 and that it's participating in a panel called "Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime." In other words, the details will become official next month.
Skype recently posted a help document on its website detailing how to make video calls using Skype for iPhone, according to Engadget. Unfortunately, there did not appear to be a corresponding document for Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Phone, webOS, or other mobile operating systems, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Skype is limiting the launch to the iPhone. Remember, most tablets that are currently available or that are launching early next year, also have front-facing cameras.
Skype already has video conferencing built into its PC and Mac applications that users can access via their webcams. Bringing video calling to Skype's mobile app, one that is available on multiple platforms, would be revolutionary. Skype already has a huge user base and it could grow that number very quickly if this leak is right on the money.

Toshiba strikes chip deals with Samsung and Sony

Toshiba, the world's third biggest chip maker behind Intel and Samsung, is planning on outsourcing output of some system chips to Samsung Electronics and selling a production line to Sony. The company wants to reduce its non-memory chip exposure by restructuring its chip operations after the business lost the company billions of dollars during the global financial crisis two years ago. At the same time, Toshiba wants to build a new domestic factory to make LCD panels with total investment likely to be over 100 billion yen ($1.21 billion), according to Reuters.
In the next financial year, which starts in April, Toshiba will design cutting-edge system chips but will outsource production to Samsung and possibly other companies. This will free up resources for other projects (like memory modules) by eliminating the need for capacity upgrades, which could actually benefit Toshiba in the long run. Toshiba is the world's second biggest supplier of NAND flash memory; Samsung is first.
The company will also sell its system chip production line in the Nagasaki prefecture to Sony. The line produces chips used in the PlayStation console and is housed in a factory owned by Sony, so the transition should be a smooth one. An industry source has estimated the deal at 50 billion yen ($603.05 million). Sony originally sold the facility to Toshiba for 90 billion yen in 2008.

How To Improve Samsung Corby Music and Volume

Hi Guys, today we will talk about the Samsung Corby Phones which usually have a very less volume in their phones. And it really irritates me when i hear music in my Samsung Corby TXT B3210. I would not say it has a bad clarity and a bad volume, after all it is a 3.5mm ear jack headphone compatible mobile so some thing is special in that phone which can help you to have a better music experience. I have tried to improve my phone volume and i was a bit successful in it. I will now share some useful tips with you guys so that you can enjoy the music with good clarity and volume.
People say that the music experience in samsung corby is not upto the mark. I partly agree to this point but there are still some awesome phones in samsung which are not bad compared to other music edition phones. One of them is samsung corby txt b3210, though it is a txt message phone it has a good music levels which can entertain us.

I myself have found some tips which made my music experience a lot better. Some of them are:

1) Always use a good 3.5 mm audio jack earphone which are recommended by the manufactures (Any branded earphone is better in this case).
2) Dont use all the 38mb internal memory which slows down the phone’s performance.
3) Always download or use 320kbps mp3 songs which are very good at clarity.
4) Make sure that you are using a mp3 for a music player.
5) There are some equalizer options in Samsung music player. Like POP, ROCK, DANCE, WIDE, DYNAMIC, CLASSIC, JAZZ, which can be used to improve the quality while using a headphone. (press 2(default) to change them in Samsung Corby phones)
6) Remember that samsung phones also support other formats like WAV, AMR, and other types of audio formats which are equalently good compared to MP3.
7) Try to convert the music files to WAVE with a good audio converter to make the quality better. It amazingly improves the sound quality and also size :D
8) When converting any file to WAVE make the settings compatible to 256kbps or 320kbps.

9) Its always a better option to not to make the phone busy with too many applications and data.

10) I prefer Total Video Converter to convert the mp3 files to wave files with a good custom settings.
Try to download the trail version and check whether it is useful to you or not. If you find it useful then buy it or search it some where, but don’t ask me the key. i don’t have one

How to Speed Up Torrents In BitTorrent and UTorrent

Most of the people are not aware of torrents and there functionality so i am writing for them, this is not for people who know lot more about this torrents. So what is a torrent? A Torrent is a peer to peer downloading application program which enables us a option to resume the download from where we have stopped earlier. This is very useful for downloading data which is larger in size and the usage of torrents saves us lots of time.

So how to use torrents? This is quiet simple. All we have to do is to download a torrent client such as bittorrent or utorrent or any other and just install it somewhere in your computer and now go to any torrents website like http://thepiratebay.org/http://btjunkie.org/ or www.alivetorrents.com/  and etc. or you can direct visit the torrents search engine www.torrentz.com and search for any data which needed and just download the torrent file under the search and open it with the client which we have downloaded and installed earlier. Its always a good option to check the comments when we are downloading any particular torrents because some might be fake or damaged.
In the above screen shot we can a link where we can download the torrent and also we can see some comments are written. Just click on download torrent and save to your computer and open it with client. see the below screen shot where bit torrent client is downloading a file.
As we can see that the torrent is downloading fast and without any errors here. now a routine question how to speed up torrents? Some times we may get our torrents very slow that they download only half the downloading speed which is available to it. Its because of lack of seeds which are not available to it. For this we need to add some trackers to the torrent to make the torrent download faster. Just open the client and click on the torrent which is downloading and right click on the torrent which is downloading and click on properties and in General u can see some list of urls which come default with the torrent. Just copy new url tracker url under it and make sure each one is separated with a single gap line so that each tracker have some place. the empty line between two trackers must not have any data written in it.
here udp:// must be attached to http:// as shown. Now where to find torrent trackers for a torrent? Each torrent which is created will have some trackers in there websites for relevant data which is being downloaded. For example if we download any data from www.torrentz.com it will shows some suggested sites to download the torrent and also some trackers under them. See below screen shot for a brief idea.
Just copy them and paste in the torrent file when ever the torrent gets slow. The trackers will be updated for every hours by the websites so just make the best use of them. By this way we can speed up the torrentz and also time :) Comment on the post and please like it if its worth :) If you are not having a torrent client just download from here.

How to convert your 1Gb memory card into 2Gb

I think every one try this and fed up of converting your 1Gb mem card into 2Gb but it is possible in most of the cases (but not 100%)

Simply follow the steps given below (don't forget it includes some risk )its up to you:

Steps:

1) First of all we have to make sure that its a 1 GB memory card. This only works on 1GB And it supports only in some of the rare cases of memory cards.

2) Now Backup all your data in that because we have to format the drive.

3) After backing up now open the Skimedi Fix 2GB Capacity application. i will upload a link at the end of post.

4) A small window will pop up showing the FIX and Cancel option. And you have to browse the drive where it is located (generally G: or L: drive for USB sticks)

5) After selecting the drive press on FIX and then the updating process will be followed up. It will ask your conformation whether you agree to format or not. click on yes.

6) Later it will ask to replug the device. Just replug the memory stick card and put it back. The size of the memory will be increased from 1Gb to 2Gb. you can see the properties before and after the cracking process.

7) After that you can also check the memory size in phone and also you can test the size by copying all the data to it which is around 2Gb.

8) I personally tested this and now i have converted my 1Gb to 2Gb and using 1.8 space with no problem.

9) You can reopen the Skimedi Fix and select the drive again where it shows us the size as 1912mb which is nothing but 2Gb.

10) Some times we get a parameter error while copying the files which have crossed the 1Gb size so this may not be 100% successful.
